What is a Davison chart? The relationship’s birth chart

Updated: 1 November 2026

A Davison chart is cast for the moment exactly halfway between two people’s births and the place halfway between their birthplaces. Named after astrologer Ronald Davison, it is read as the relationship’s own “birth chart”.

How is a Davison chart calculated?

First, the exact midpoint in time between the two births is found. If one person was born on 1 January 1990 and the other on 1 January 1994, the Davison moment is around 1 January 1992. Then the geographic midpoint of the two birthplaces is taken. A real chart is cast for that moment and place, just like a normal birth chart.

Davison or composite?

Both describe the relationship itself and often show similar themes. The difference is the method: a composite chart computes planet-by-planet midpoints, so it can sometimes produce placements that are impossible in reality (such as Mercury far from the Sun). A Davison chart is a real moment in the sky; the relationships between planets are natural, and the chart can be read like a person’s birth chart. Many astrologers recommend looking at both.

How to read a Davison chart

The aspects in the chart describe the relationship’s inner dynamics: harmonious aspects show the areas that flow easily, and challenging ones show the areas to work on.

Its limits

A Davison chart is a symbolic chart based on the time and distance between two births, and astrology is not a science. It is at its best as a starting point for thinking of your relationship as its own being and talking about what it needs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Davison and a composite chart?

A composite chart calculates the midpoint of each planet’s two positions mathematically, so the result may never have existed in the sky. A Davison chart is cast for a real moment halfway between two births and a real place halfway between two birthplaces, so it is an actual snapshot of the sky.

Do you need birth times for a Davison chart?

Planet positions can be approximated without birth times. The relationship’s Ascendant, houses and the Moon’s exact position, however, need both people’s birth times.

What does the date in a Davison chart mean?

The moment halfway between two births is treated as the relationship’s symbolic birth moment. The date doesn’t need any real-life significance; it’s what the chart is calculated for.
