Synastry aspects and their meanings

Updated: 26 October 2026

In synastry, the aspects between two people’s planets make up the texture of the relationship. The planets involved tell you what the contact is about; the type of aspect tells you how it plays out.

The five main synastry aspects

☌︎ Conjunction (0°)

Two planets meet at the same point and their energies merge. The conjunction is the most intense type of contact, and the feeling of “I’ve known you forever” often comes from here. Its tone depends on the planets: a Venus–Jupiter conjunction is sweet and generous, while a Mars–Pluto conjunction can be passionate but demanding.

△︎ Trine (120°)

The most flowing aspect. The planets sit in signs of the same element and understand each other naturally. Trines show the “easy” areas of a relationship, where you get along without trying. The only risk is that ease can be taken for granted.

⚹︎ Sextile (60°)

Similar to a trine, but lighter. It offers supportive potential that turns into real opportunity with a little effort. A good sign for shared projects, learning together and friendship-based bonds.

□︎ Square (90°)

The aspect of friction. The two planets want different things, which can lead to arguments. But squares have an attractive side too: the tension keeps a relationship alive and pushes both people to grow. They are common in lasting relationships.

☍︎ Opposition (180°)

The planets sit at opposite ends of the sky. Oppositions carry the “opposites attract” effect: you see in your partner what you feel you lack. In balance you complete each other; out of balance, it becomes a tug of war.

Frequently asked questions

What does orb mean in synastry?

The orb is how far an aspect is from exact. If two planets are 3° away from a perfect conjunction, the orb is 3°. Tighter orbs are considered stronger, and slightly wider orbs are allowed for key points like the Sun and Moon.

Which synastry aspect is the best?

There is no single best aspect. Trines and sextiles bring ease, conjunctions bring intensity, and squares and oppositions bring attraction and tension. Strong relationships usually show a mix of all of them.

Why do Uranus, Neptune and Pluto matter less?

These planets move so slowly that people of a similar age have them in the same signs, so aspects between two people’s outer planets are generational rather than personal. When one person’s outer planet touches the other’s Sun, Moon or Venus, though, the contact becomes personal.
